Breaking a long range of Hamradio only posts, specially this week, I thought I'd write a short post about the software running this page. Yesterday, WordPress 3.0 was released. It has been worked on for nearly half a year. I upgraded it yesterday as soon as I noticed it was available. The upgrade for me, didn't bump into any problems. My site is running like normal.

I didn't notice much changes at first, but there are several new features. One is the merge of WordPress MU and WordPress. That means you can run several sites on one installation. Another is the new menu stuff. A whole bunch of bugs has been fixed too. Twenty Ten, a new default theme, was also released bundled with the 3.0 package.

Read the release info over here.

Well, lots of LoTW stuff lately and not too much radio. I did manage 3 contacts with YI9PSE right before they went QRT. I'm happy I got them logged. They will upload the log to LoTW, and that will be a new one. I haven't managed to work any of the other guys from Iraq that are LoTW users. On April 11th, I worked TA2ZAF on 30M RTTY. That was a new one on 30M RTTY and I got TA confirmed in RTTY on LoTW. I managed to work 3W6C on 30M and 40M for a new Iota (AS-185). T2A was worked on 30M for a new one on 30M (#264). Some of the other stuff I worked has been A71EM 17M CW, P29VJY, 9V1PC, UN9LU and SV5/SM8C on 30M CW. On April 19th I noticed YS1ZC spotted on 40M, and he is an LoTW user. I managed to work him and I uploaded the log before work. I noticed in the reply mail from LoTW, that YS1ZC was allready there. I think that must be my quickest confirmation so far with 11 minutes past since the contact. Now I know you can get quicker confirmations than this if you both agree to upload right after the QSO, but this was pure coincidence.

As some of you may have noticed, I did some changes to my WordPress theme. I changed the look of my menu and made it a dropdown menu instead. Now you can see that the menu items have subpages when hovering the mouse over the menu. Before this change, you had to visit the page to notice it. I also made a little change to the comment looks. I find that these changes looks much nicer now. I have given up in trying to get everything to look good and work in IE6 (Internet Explorer 6). It is such a timewasting thing to have the page compatible with an old browser like that. The page should work ok in all modern browsers.

The reason I wrote this post, was that I noticed something strange a few weeks back. Suddenly the commentfield vanished. I couldn't really understand what had happened, and I have no clue for how long this had been going on. I tried to think of any changes I had done, but I couldn't remember anything.

As so many times before, I started to check the plugins and disabling a few, but nothing helped. Since I run several plugins, it takes time to disable and enable each and everyone, so I just disabled them all. The commentfield came back. My suspicions were right, it was a plugin problem. After enabling several plugins, I found the problem. It was CKEditor who was giving me the problem. It turns out that it has an option to use it for commenting. However, it didn't work for me, and the field just disappeared. After turning off that option, everything was back to normal.

This wasn't the first time I have had some strange problems. Usually it is a plugin conflicting with either other plugins or the theme itself. So if any of my readers noticed they couldn't comment, you now know why.

Unfortunately, I missed some places when fixing the privilege escalation issues for 2.8.1. Luckily, the entire WordPress community has our backs. Several folks in the community dug deeper and discovered areas that were overlooked. With their help, the remaining issues are fixed in 2.8.3. Since this is a security release, upgrading is highly recommended. Download 2.8.3, or upgrade automatically from your admin.

Since WordPress 2.8 was released a few days ago, I quickly updated it here. No problems with the upgrade this time either, and several pluginauthors had updated their plugins too. One thing I don’t like about the new version, is how the adminsection under plugins looks like. I prefer very much the old way of showing the plugins. One thing I like however, is the syntaxhighlighting and the linenumbers in the editor. If you haven’t updated, then go do it now

Other stuff updated: (or things done when 6M is dead)

6M summary updated to reflect the new countries and new squares worked in this season so far.

My last log entries was uploaded to LoTW.

My online logsearch is also updated.

A small report this time since I haven’t been on the radio for several days. On Sunday, I had a go on 30M. I called CQ and was spotted by ZL2IFB, thanks Gary. Band was open for some DX, and I got 15 JA’s in the log and one HL with HL3IB. I worked the following JA call areas: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 0. Signals were quite strong, with some stations having QSB and echoes. With these openings, I have noticed that I hear something I believe are my own echoes coming back. When I run CW, I run full break-in, and I can listen in between my dots and dashes. I hear faint tones, so I guess they are my own signal coming back at me from somewhere. Kinda fun listening to it, but I couldn’t detect it on my own recording though.

Later in the day on Sunday, I worked C31CT for a new one on 30M (#237). He was running on 10.111, a frequency with heavy qrm, but luckily, I read him most of the time.

Here are the soundclips this time:

EL2DX 30M CW

C31CT 30M CW – notice the very noisy frequency on 10.111

And a few stations I picked out from the 42minute recording on 30M Sunday morning:

JG3QZN 30M CW – Kazu

HL3IB 30M CW – Kim

I also uploaded my latest QSOes to LoTW. Three hits with the contacs on Sunday, SV1LK, IZ8EEL and JI2KTX. New countries confirmed lately are D4C and A43DLH. Now my total are 196 LoTW only.

WordPress 2.7 was released yesterday. I have been running early builds on a testblog without any problems at all. I had in mind to upgrade this blog to 2.7 RC2, but when I finally had the time to do so, 2.7 was released! I had no problems with the update, but as always, disabling the plugins first before you are upgrading, is very wise. I didn’t disable Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu before the upgrade, so I had no left menu. It was easily fixed by accessing plugin.php and disabling it after the upgrade. I also got a pleasant surprise that Admin Drop Down Menu was upgraded for 2.7. Now I can continue to use my favorite plugin. NextGEN Gallery 1.0 was also released yesterday. All in all, I did a lot of upgrading and everything worked out without any problems.

Get the stuff here:

Quote from the release http://wordpress.org/development/2008/12/coltrane/ :

December 11, 2008
WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane”
By Matt. Filed under Development.

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, we’ve listened to your feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version. (Download it now, or read on for more.)

Next you’ll begin to notice the new features subtly sprinkled through the new interface: the new dashboard that you can arrange with drag and drop to put the things most important to you on top, QuickPress, comment threading, paging, and the ability to reply to comments from your dashboard, the ability to install any plugin directly from WordPress.org with a single click, and sticky posts.

Digging in further you might notice that every screen is customizable. Let’s say you never care about author on your post listings — just click “Screen Options” and uncheck it and it’s instantly gone from the page. The same for any module on the dashboard or write screen. If your screen is narrow and the menu is taking up too much horizontal room, click the arrow to minimize it to be icon-only, and then go to the write page and drag and drop everything from the right column into the main one, so your posting area is full-screen. (For example I like hiding everything except categories, tags, and publish. I put categories and tags on the right, and publish under the post box.)

A new version was just released. It’s a minor update with a vulnerability fix in the Snoopy library. WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard. It’s low risk, but I updated anyhow. In the link below, you can download 2 files and upload, so the update is a quick one. http://wordpress.org/development/2008/10/wordpress-263/
