ZK3YA #254 on LoTW and #100 (LoTW) on 15M

Posted: April 14th, 2010 under Hamradio, LoTW.

lotw-logo-c.jpg ZK3YA gave me #254 on LoTW. Thank you Bob. 3B9WR and CR1M gave me two new LoTW confirmations on 12M. CX6VM gave me #100 (LoTW) on 15M and a new one on 10M (LoTW). Now I hope for some 12M and 10M openings to gather those last few to get 100 LoTW confirmations on those two bands.

3 new on LoTW with CX2AQ, TG9IRP and V55X

Posted: April 3rd, 2010 under DX, Hamradio, LoTW, Soundclips.

lotw-logo-c.jpg Confirmations keep coming in. It does help a lot to focus on LoTW users too. I logged several on 15M in the RDCX (Russian DX Contest) and almost all of them are confirmed on LoTW. On March 21st I worked CX2AQ on 12M CW. He uses LoTW, and I didn't have CX at all, so it was nice to get him in the log and get him confirmed the 29th of April on LoTW (#251). On March 25th, I suddenly heard TG9IRP quite strong on 15M CW. After a few minutes in the pile-up, I got him in the log. That was #224 on 15M and he gave me another new one on LoTW (#252). I also got EX8AB on 30M for a new one on RTTY (#190). On the 27th, I worked T32MI for a new one on 30M (#263) and CW (#313). I also worked V55X on 15M, he gave me #253 on LoTW.

OH8X Radio Arcala – ARRL CW 2010 – the story

Posted: March 29th, 2010 under Contesting, Hamradio.

_2192531 It was late January when I got the chance to join LB3HC Marius and a few other guys to work the ARRL contest from Radio Arcala OH8X. After clearing with my work that I could get a few days off, tickets were ordered and everything was set.

On Thursday February 18th, I was picked up at the Oulu airport. We arrived at the station after about 40 minutes. It almost felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. The last part we drove, were on long straight roads with no houses in sight. And suddenly, we took off into the forest. Since it was late in the evening, it was all dark, so all I could see were some red light up in the two highest towers. I could only imagine how things would look like in daylight. The weather was quite cold with temperatures around -30C, luckily it was nice and warm inside.

_2202629 OH8NC Juha, LB3HC Marius and LA6FJA Stein Roar was already there. LB3HC arrived on Wednesday, and LA6FJA had arrived earlier that day. OH7EA Antti were set to arrive on Friday. After getting a quick tour of the cabin it was time to check out the shack. It was very tidy and nice built up. Tower rotating was easy with touchscreen control. You just had to touch the tower you wanted to turn and choose on a map where it should beam into. As for choosing antennas to work with, it was done automatically. _2192504 You only had to choose which stack to transmit and/or listen to. The system is very professional built up. You can choose from one or more towers to use at the same time. That way you can for instance transmit in two directions and only listen in one.

A bit later, I had to try out the station. The software we were going to use was Win-Test. Since I haven't used it before, I had to practice a little bit. As I know that OH8X often have those late night openings to the US, I hit 20M CW. After about 20 minutes and 25qsoes, I went to 40M, but I couldn't really get a good run here either. I guess OH isn't that rare. I went back to 20M, were I heard KP2/K3TEJ and V31GA with an auroral sound. I worked both of them. I then went to 80M CW to try the 5 element. I heard HS0ZEE strong and worked him easy. BA8BA came back nice and strong on my CQ. I worked a handful of stations and among them were FG5FR and J38JO with strong signals. After a quick visit to 40M were I worked C6APG, I found that 20M was still open. Getting few takers, I went to bed. I was a bit tired, and sleep is always good.

The next morning I wanted to check out 15M. I heard several stations, and started cqing. I worked several JA's, ZL, VK, BY and 5Z0H. On 40M I worked 6Y1LZ. I couldn't get a run on 40M, so I checked 20M. Bill 5W0OU was there cqing away. The signal wasn't that strong, but I broke the pile-up. I continued on 20M and a few hours later I went to 40M. I worked almost 200 qsoes before the contest with the OH8X call. I can tell you, that with a system like this, you are sure to get spoiled. Breaking a few pile-up's were easy, and it was nice to be a big-gun for a change.

_2192615 I did make use of the day to take a lot of pictures which can be seen under photoalbums. I even captured a nice sunset with the M1 (4 x 6el 20M, 2 x 2 el 80M) 105M high tower. Ah, you gotta love towers in the sunset!

LA6FJA and I were set up to work the same 9 hour pass, so we got a few hours of sleep in the evening. When I woke, OH7EA had arrived. The crew were now complete and we were ready for the contest.

We hit the airwaves as the contest started. The run weren't that excellent, but qsoes kept filling up the log. The run got slower and slower during the night and when our pass was over, LB3HC and OH7EA took over. We were on a 9 hour rotating shift until the last night. Conditions were a bit up and down most of the weekend. 20M didn't have that long haul late night opening to the US the first night. The second night, it was much better. 15M was quite good on Saturday, but even better on Sunday. 15M never really closed until around 21z on Sunday. The band was quite amazing long after dark with plenty of KH6 stations coming through, and even TX4T. OH7EA gave them a call. 20M turned out to be our moneyband with 40M in second and 15M on third. oh8x_arrl_cw_2010_win-test On Sunday night, we never left 20M, and worked it till the end. There were a few hours with very slow rates on Sunday morning were we had autocq on both radioes with no reply. At some point, it almost felt like we emptied out 40M. We got spotted several times, but no callers. All in all it was great to run the contest from this superstation. We broke the Finnish Multi2 record by about 1.7 million points and our claimed score is 2.7 million.

I would like to thank Juha OH8NC and Veijo OH6KN for their hospitality and letting us use the OH8X station. I would also like to thank Marius LB3HC for making this possible and thanks goes to the rest of the team; LA6FJA and OH7EA for a great weekend.

#249 and #250 on LoTW with EX8AB and Z21BB

Posted: March 20th, 2010 under DX, Hamradio, LoTW, Soundclips.

lotw-logo-c.jpg I'm happy right now. I reached my goal of 250 DXCC LoTW only confirmations. The next natural goal is 300, but I think that will take a while. In the meantime I'm working on getting 100 or more on 15M, 12M and 10M as well as LoTW WAS. The last two new confirmations were EX8AB worked on 30M CW and Z21BB worked on 15M CW.

On Thursday I worked KH7XS on 20M SSB for our fourth band. He was strong as always. ZK3OU and ZP6/N3BNA were worked on 20M CW. 8P9RY was worked on 17M RTTY and he uploaded the log quickly to LoTW. On Friday I worked Z21BB on 15M for #224 and he was quick to upload the log on LoTW to give me #250. Thank you. I tried to work him the evening before on 30M, but he didn't hear me then. I did hear CE0Y/LA9SN on 12M CW, but the signal was just too weak for me. I also tried 8P9RY on 12M CW, but I couldn't break the pile-up. On Saturday I worked ZK3YA on 20M CW. I did try to work Z21BB on 12M, but couldn't make myself heard. ZK3OU was in on 17M, but signal just wasn't strong enough that I could break the pile-up.

#247 and #248 on LoTW with A31A and TX5SPM

Posted: March 17th, 2010 under DX, Hamradio, LoTW, Soundclips.

lotw-logo-c.jpg I was quite surprised to get two new ones on LoTW so quickly after the last few. A31A uploaded their log and gave me #247 and TX5SPM did that as well and gave me #248. Among other confirmations are TX5SPA and TY5LEO. Thanks for getting on LoTW!

I finally turned on the radio again on Monday March 15th after having it turned off for a month. I managed to work VP5/W5SL on 12M CW (#223 12M) and 17M CW. On Tuesday, ZK3YA was coming in on 30M with a nice signal and I managed to log him for #262 on 30M. On Wednesday I worked 3B9WR on 12M CW. It was not a new one, but he uses LoTW according to qrz.com. E21EJC was cqing on 17M CW and came back for #263 on 17M. That was our fourth band. EX8AB had a nice signal on 30M, and I quickly worked him. He is supposed to be an LoTW user, so I hope to get that one soon. HS0AC were on 12M CW today, but I could not get through. 7P8AO was also on 12M, but no go there either. I'm happy that the higher bands are opening up, but still a long way till 6M opens.
