CQ WW 160M CW report

Posted: January 28th, 2009 under Contesting, DX, Hamradio, LoTW.

cqlogo.jpg I participated in this contest mainly to get new countries, so the effort could always have been better. But as I have realized several years ago, I’ll always be a casual contester. I did work 21 new countries on 160M and many new states. The conditions were excellent, but big pile-ups made it very difficult to get through to many of them. An overcrowded band also made it very difficult to find "free" frequencies.

On both mornings, I was hearing lots of DX in broad daylight, several hours after sunrise. Most of the US, KH6 and KL7 were quite strong, but I just couldn’t make myself heard. On Sunday morning, XE was also strong, but it was still a no-go. The operation was made from the excellent station at LA8W. An inverted-l with elevated radials and 4 beverage listening antennas is a real pleasure to operate.

Total: QSOs = 1066 State/Prov = 42 Countries = 67 Total Score = 666,644

My country score is now 88 on 160M. The log has been uploaded to LoTW. Lots of confirmations are ticking in, and 5 new countries, now totalling 205. The new ones are MD4K, HS0ZEE, E77CFG, YT2U, YL2PP.
